Mia and Bella chose masks that would match with dresses. “Oh, this is your mask!” she said and gave me a blue mask with diamonds and laces, covering it. “Wow! It’s very beautiful, Ky!” Bella exclaimed. “Yes! Lucky bitch!” Mia laughed. “I can’t take it!” I stated. “What?!” Mia, Bella and that worker screamed in unison.

I muttered, leaning closer so he could hear me over the buzz of the crowd, “Reagan doesn’t even know the names of half these people.” He smirked, his gaze sweeping the room. “Everyone’s wearing a mask.” “It’s a masquerade party, I think.” I spotted a nearby table stacked with ornate masks, clearly intended for anyone who needed one. I grabbed two and turned to Blaze, holding one out to him. “Here. Let’s blend in.” I slipped my mask on—a delicate, silver piece adorned with tiny crystals—and gestured for Blaze to do the same. He took his time, studying his black and gold mask like it was some kind of alien artifact before finally putting it on.

She says looking at the masks and picking a few up. He asked me. I shook my head. “It’s not important,” I said as I opened the red box. Inside was a beautiful masquerade mask. It was simple and pearl white on the right side. And on the other side, it looked like a butterfly. It was elegant and extravagant at the same time. “Put it on little one.” He said while putting on a mask that matched his black suit. “Thank you, Godric. This is all too nice.” We hugged one last time before dispersing from the small waiting room and into the grand ballroom.

He used to say my bob haircut hurt his eyes, that I walked around all day with a blank expression and a sickly yellow face, like something not quite human. The insecurity that haunted me for years had his name written all over it. Now, looking at him again, he had slicked-back hair, a bloated face, and a protruding beer belly that even his oversized suit couldn't hide. Years had passed, but he was just as unpleasant as ever. Marisol got up and walked to the walk-in closet, rummaging through the pile of clothes she'd scattered earlier to find a mask. It was one of the masks Emilia had sent over before the masquerade ball. She had told her to choose whichever she liked. "The ball's already over. What do you need that for?" Alinta followed. "Does it look good?" Marisol picked up a white cat half-mask, held it over the upper half of her face, and looked up at Alinta.

With a reluctant sigh, she grabbed the dress and went to change. When she stepped out, Julian’s eyes widened slightly before a slow grin spread across his face. "Well, damn, Brooks. You’re gonna turn some heads tonight. A little makeup, and—" "It’s a masquerade," she cut in, adjusting the hem of her dress. "I’ll be wearing a mask. No one’s going to see my face." Julian chuckled. "Fair enough. Even without makeup, you look good. Let’s go."

His world had shrunk to the four walls of her domain and the sound of her voice. The night of the masquerade arrived. Julianna handed him his costume: a tailored black tuxedo. It felt alien against his skin, a costume in every sense. She herself was a vision of terrifying beauty. She wore a gown of deep crimson, the colour of fresh blood, and a silver mask that covered the upper half of her face, shaped like the elegant, spreading wings of a raven. She didn’t need a mask to be intimidating, but it made her look like a goddess of vengeance.
