“Is that Blair? What the hell happened?” I brushed past him and entered the office, my strides quickly eating up the distance. “She’s having difficulty breathing, hacking coughs and it looks like she’s got a fever.” I told him as I settled her on the couch. This felt like deja vu, I could still remember the night she’d passed out in my arms from near hypothermia.

It was like she was glued to my body, and I liked it that way. “Just get the car,” I ordered. Blaze nodded and ran off. I grabbed my shirt and covered her with it. I had so many questions, and most of them weren’t even for her. Blaze came back, and I carried her to my SUV. I sat in the back seat with her. She trembled violently, and panic kicked in. “She’s shivering,” I said. “That water’s freezing,” Blaze commented. “No one’s ever gotten hyperthermia from it,” I replied.

He was as light as a paper and as I turned him, I found his face red, eyes closed, a trail of tears left on his cheeks. “Blue?” I placed my hand on his chest and shook, getting no response. No. No. No. He was too light, his head rolling back without support. In a panic I sat him down and picked up his arm to drop it, watching it fly back to the bed loosely. “Blue,” I nearly screamed as I called to him. He was too hot, his body weak. I jumped from the bed, running to pick up my phone only to drop it. I ran to Blue again.

"You’re just giving me the narrative bridge I was missing, Ellsy. It’s brilliant. Seriously, you’re saving my life right now. Let’s finish this section, and I promise, I’ll buy you the biggest burger in town." Before I can figure out how to respond, the heat starts. It hits me exactly the way it hits when I push too hard in the final lap of a race. It starts at the base of my spine, a sudden, violent spike of temperature that flares outward, turning my blood to battery acid. I gasp, dropping my hands from the table to grip my knees. She hadn’t seen Mark, the oldest of the famous billionaire Roberts siblings, and nobody seemed to know where he was. I tried to sit up again, but pain lanced through my side, and I winced. “No sudden movements,” she said, checking something on a clipboard. “You’ve been unconscious for a little over two days. The infection was bad. Your wound reopened again. We had to close it fully and monitor for fever. You almost didn’t make it.”
