I won’t tell anyone.” I smiled softly and stepped even closer, backing her gently against the shelves. “Relax. Professor Harlan and I… we have an understanding. But I saw how you looked at us. You didn’t run away because you were scared. You ran because it turned you on, didn’t it?” Her cheeks burned brighter. She shook her head quickly. “No… that’s not… I’m not—”

She reached out and picked one up, running her fingers over the worn spine. She opened it. The words pulled her in gently, wrapping around her mind like something warm and familiar, something she hadn't felt in a long time. Page after page passed unnoticed. The room faded. The fear softened. She didn't know how long she read. Only that exhaustion eventually claimed her. The book slipped from her fingers, landing softly against her chest as her head tilted to the side. Sleep took her quietly, curled on the edge of the chair, unaware of how dangerous it was to forget herself, even for a moment in that room.

At least with the trusty young librarian. “How about something scary?” I look at the mom before handing her the book we had already discussed while the child had been in class. “Is it too scary?” The girl pulls her hands back and turns to her mother. “Is just a little bit.” I place the book on the counter and wait for her to make the decision. “Or there’s a not scary one I think you’d like.” I watch amused as her forehead creases, she’s thinking hard and the smile as she takes the copy of Sam Wu is Not Afraid of Ghosts.
