It read, in big block print, “Santa’s Workshop.” “Right,” Serendipity nodded, realizing that if she could read, she would have known that. Her face lost a bit of the glimmer from before, but she still stared in awe. “How amazing!” she whispered, looking up at several stories of glass windows and the brightly dressed elves scurrying about with various toys, different patterns of wrapping paper, and other items essential to making and finishing off Christmas presents.

“We have a feast now.” After dinner, we exchanged our gifts. Noah opened the book first, a worn paperback copy of a science fiction novel he had mentioned wanting to read. He turned it over in his hands, his thumb tracing the creased spine with a gentleness that made my throat tight. Then the pencils, then the coffee, each gift received with the same careful wonder, as if he could not quite believe that someone had chosen something specifically for him. "Your turn," he said, and he handed me a small box wrapped in brown paper and tied with a piece of red string.

“Apparently, I can’t leave my restaurant unattended without chaos breaking loose.” He chuckled. “That’s because you run a tight ship.” She softened. “Maybe. But I don’t regret it. I’m glad we came home for Christmas. I needed that time.” “Me too!” Laya chimed in before yawning so wide her eyes watered. “Best Christmas ever.” She rubbed her face. “Daddy, can you tell me a bedtime story again tonight? The one about the brave princess?” Jordan nodded instantly. “Of course I can. Bath and PJs first, then Momma will bring you the phone. And tonight, that princess might get a dragon.”

His mother had really been a godsend. After he dressed her in her Christmas pajamas and her dress was properly hung in the closet, he pulled back the blankets on her bed. "Okay, little girl. Time for bed." Abby hopped up into bed. Then Taren tucked her in and sat down on the edge of her bed. "Would you like me to read you The Night Before Christmas?" Now it was an unspoken rule in the company because I wouldn't have it any other way. A text notification lit up the screen of my phone, snagging my attention away from the past, and I picked it up, quickly dialing the number of the agency Parker had just sent, and waited with bated breath as it rang. “You have reached The Xmas Xpress, Erika speaking.
