Silence lingered between them. The rest of the flight was quiet as Kevin sat in another seat at the back busy signing documents and discussing business matters while Emma read a book and intermittently looked out the window watching the scenery below and sometimes stealing a glance back at him and caught him looking at her. After an hour, Kevin walked to her, checking on her as she drifted off to sleep. The leather-bound book she was reading lay open on her lap, the words written on its open page clearly visible; “If I know what love is, it is because of you!" Kevin smiled and then put the book aside. There was no lie in it.

Her heart raced as she looked over the handsome young man lying beside her, half naked. Her mind raced with questions—who was he? How did he get here? And why was he sleeping beside her? Just then, the events of the previous night came flooding back to her. She remembered everything—the strange book, the eerie moonlight, and Zoren Bullet. It was then that she realized that the man next to her was none other than the character from the book. She couldn't believe it—he was real, and he was lying right beside her. Panic set in as she frantical

The Great Vampire said, then walked out charismatically. I could hear the sound of her heels hitting the ground, and I waited until it faded away. I breathed a sigh of relief after ensuring that the Great Vampire was far away. It was a big relief that she had gone, because it felt as if I was facing death in the eye. I laid on the ground to feel alive after the fear that moulded in her heart when the Great Vampire was still here. After a while, I stood up, and walked towards the bottom of the shelf to pick up the book that I had removed before. I reached out my hand to it, and had almost gotten my hand on it when Veronica’s voice stopped me.

They were all screaming Elspeth's name. Silently I stood up from where she attacked me. She has no knowledge that I blocked her attack. I sighed and removed the waterfall braids onto my hair before I break their fun. "Silence!" I screamed loud, and with one word, what I wanted was then granted. Pure silence covered the place as I ascend, glowing because of my aura. I held my head high and turned my gaze to the demons around me. With a glare, one by one they went down onto their knees. "I am Veronica Vane. I am your one and only true Queen and Herald. No impostor can bring me down to the ground."

She felt as if she were outside of herself, looking down, and she became more and more confused. She read. And read. And read. Finally, it hit her like a lightning bolt: this book, it was hers. Her journal. The journal of a teenage girl. A story of coming of age. Of going back in time. Of falling in love with a man named Caleb. Of having a daughter named Scarlet. Of becoming a vampire. She wondered if she were losing her mind. Was this some sort of practical joke? Some sort of fantasy she’d had as a young girl? What was it doing here? How did her grandmother have it? And why was she only drawn to open it now, at this time?

Even the garbage had value if someone had enough sense to use it. As she walked, Vera remembered that an ambush was supposed to happen soon. In the book, this was supposed to be one of those scenes where Vera panicked, cried, and barely survived because the written Vera had been a coward in every way the plot needed her to be. Of course she would be. That Vera had never lived through the end of the world.
