But my mind kept drifting back to the smell of the damp ground from this morning. To write Book 2, I need a plot, a direction, a sign. But right now, there is no "after." Jacob stood by the counter, pretending to read the paper, although his eyes had never moved across the words. Instead, he watched her, how she gripped on her mug tightly with both hands, as if she needed something warm and steady to hold on to. Last night was nearly a disaster. Alex had walked into the hallway, minutes after Jacob had urged Emily to go back to her room. Their breathing was uneven and their hands were too close.
