I got into my car, drove carefully toward the local book store, they had the new book reserved for me. It was supposed to one quick drive, until I walked into the library. A girl was sitting on a bean bag, her blond hair was covering her eyes with overgrown bangs, she tried to huff them away from her face but to no use. As she searched the catalog, she was thrilled to see her library had, on hand, editions of most of them Caitlin grabbed a cart and had dove into the stacks, looking up each book by its call number, and slowly adding them to her stack. In the far corner is a sink and a crude-looking toilet. Hooks line one of the walls, all empty. The air smells like rust and dust. But then, something catches my eye. A shelf near the back, almost hidden in shadow. Not plastic packages this time. Books. Old ones. Their spines are worn, leather cracked. Some have gold filigree. Others are thick and bound in cloth. I move closer, squinting to read the faded titles. “Lineage of Power.” “The Lost Coronation.” “Treaties of the First Blood.”

After he was gone, Liana asks me whether I had any specific book in mind, and when I mentioned mages, she guided me to the last aisle. “This is the only section we have,” she murmurs, sounding almost apologetic. I plaster a small smile in reply. The library is more like a storeroom for books than anything else. It’s not big enough to fit all the books, so some are lying unattended, stacked on top of each other. She goes back to her desk while I scan the spines starting from the topmost shelf. I feel smug at seeing the not-so-good conditions of the books. Our library has red-bound books. One title catches my attention. I tip-toe and take it out.
