The weight of it all pressed down harder memories I couldn’t reach, truths buried deep inside my mind, making it impossible for me to reach them.
Arthur stepped back from the car. He looked over at me, his voice steady but gentle. “Come on. We’ll take this car back. Maybe there’s something in it we missed.”
He moved toward the front of the car, where a large branch had fallen across the hood.
Arthur grabbed hold of the thick limb, muscles tensing as he started to pull it away. The wood cracked, brittle with age, but beneath it were jagged ends, splinters, and broken bark twisted like claws.
