Broken promise
He could almost feel her there, scared and alone, running from the altar, from him, from everything.
He sank into the chair, the storm outside drumming harder. “Dear God,” he whispered. “What have I done to her?”
He pushed the papers aside and reached for the phone. His hands shook as he dialed a number he hadn’t used in years.
When the voice on the other end answered, he said, “I need a car. No, I need a team. Find her. Now. Before they do.”
His image in the window was a stranger, eyes hollow, mouth hard. But beneath the steel he felt something raw and alive again: drive.
