Part 48. Clara woke up earlier. She went straight to the kitchen. There were Mbok Iyem, Mbak Anik, and Mbak Cici preparing breakfast. "Clara, would you like some hot chocolate?" Mbok Iyem offered. She remembered the girl's favorite drink. "No, Mbok. I'm here to help prepare breakfast!" Clara replied. "No need, dear. Mr. Joe will get angry later!" Mbok Iyem cautioned, while the other two servants just looked at Clara in surprise.

“They were luxury ice cubes.” “That sentence alone proves you need more stress to keep you alive.” Laughter spread naturally around the table afterward while several staff members continued serving breakfast carefully around them. Clara sat quietly beside the ocean-facing side of the table while one of the maids poured orange juice gently into her glass. The morning breeze moved lightly through her hair while she listened quietly to the chaos around her. We gossiped for over half an hour before finally getting up to freshen up and get dressed, ready to join the others in the middle floor for breakfast. She offered me to sit on her left side as I mumbled a small thank you before sitting beside her. “We called you because now you are in our club.” Sabreena said in a hushed tone as she didn’t want other maids working in the kitchen to know about it. “What club?” I asked back in a same tone as hers. “The Moon and stars club.” She answered in a hushed tone as we all straightened up immediately when the maid came in and poured me a juice with my breakfast presented on the plate. The moment she exited the dining room we hunched down again as if we were talking about a secret mission for which we were working like undercover cops assigned by the government.

The club girls were usually in charge of breakfast, and none of them could cook worth a damn. The room was only half full of sleeping bodies, and there wasn't a glass or bottle in sight. What the hell was going on? The clubhouse was never that clean so early in the morning. Using both hands, I pushed open the door to the kitchen. “What's for breakfast?” I asked and then froze.

Taking her bag and notebook she was about to stand when Clara quickly came to her side and held her by her shoulders. “No. Stop. Go to the restroom, freshen up and come back.
