I even sorted through the old relics on the shelves, scouring the books to see their various uses. A dull blade covered in what I now knew was not rust was responsible for cleaving the souls from all those it touched. For obvious reasons I avoided the thing like the plague. There was a small painting supposedly made with human blood, a doll filled with bleached animal bones, and a gemstone as big as my fist. It reflected my haggard face back at me, only it blackened my eyes like that of a demon, causing me to lurch away in shock. “Creepy,” I muttered, swiping at my tired eyes.

He breathed in the scent of the burning aromatherapy candles before standing up and rotating the inkwell on the desk. The ground moved, revealing a space below. The man walked down the stairs, carrying a lamp. In the dark underground space, a wooden doll stood. In front of it was an array of offerings, but those were unimportant in comparison to the sheets of paper the old man was burning in front of the doll with certain people's horoscopes written on them. The fire roared, and the doll appeared to come alive, devouring all the energy around it. "Someone has destroyed my other body. Look into it," the doll said, its voice harsh and creaky.

And I certainly won’t want that not until I read enough books to get rid of my sorrows. “ How could she do this to me?” I squat in front of the book, tore into two parts. It is as though my heart…life was torn into two parts. I picked it up, as it was soaking with my tears. “ What is wrong with Sage lately?” she was gradually behaving like Lisa, heartless, manipulator.. best at being the victim. Wiping my tears, I tried to fix my book myself, but one thing I am sure of it would never remain as it was.

The rest lay in ruins, books strewn about in piles of decay. The air was thick with the scent of must and mold, and she could see cobwebs hanging from the ceiling. As Nuella walked over to one of the shelves and picked up a book, it crumbled to pieces and fell at her feet. Claude winced, feeling a twinge of sadness at the loss of such an ancient piece of knowledge.

When I first saw her, the first thought that came to my mind was — I want to be happy with her. My knuckles cracked as I curled my fingers into fists. “You cannot break what’s already broken.” “Maybe, but I can shatter the already broken into dust, can’t I?” She summoned a book in her hand. “Found this in your library. Book of curses and torture. I suppose this book was your creation, wasn’t it?” She leafed through its pages. “It has all kinds of tortures, including magical, excluding magical, mental, physical, emotional… It has the whole freaking variety.”

Bored and restless, I wandered from room to room, searching for something to occupy my mind. In Bella’s room, I spotted a book on her nightstand—Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas. I had heard good things about it, so I decided to give it a shot. I curled up on her bed, diving into the pages. For a while, it worked—I was able to lose myself in the story and momentarily forget the unease tugging at me. But, of course, that didn’t last long.
