Like looking through water. And there— Between two trunks where the shadows pooled deepest— A ripple. Not large. Not bright. But deliberate. The shape within it resolved for only a heartbeat. Tall. Too still. Limbs long and angled wrong for a dragon or human. Light seemed to bend around it rather than reflect. Watching. Not the dissenters. Not dragon. Something older. My breath left me slowly. The ripple thinned. But before it vanished completely— I felt it. Recognition. Not predatory.

I touch the back of my neck and look behind me to see that ripple effect. It was glowing and static. "Lippy!" I put the plate down and approach the unusual mysterious thing in the middle of the kitchen. Then the ripple, like a tv, suddenly pops a scene of a forest. A forest I know. "Go away, Nick!" A little girl screamed, and the ripple screen became high-quality.

It wasn’t enough to scare her off, though, and Halley lunged at Beth as Ryan began to float away, still not conscious enough to help himself. Beth was aware that the creek meandered for about a quarter mile before a small, but powerful waterfall merged the creek with the lagoon. She couldn’t let him get away from her, but Halley was coming at her again, and this time, Beth was close enough for Halley to scratch her face.

Lily recognized one of them as Jake. The pursuers crossed the brook, but soon after, they retraced their steps, hastily following the stream downstream. Lily, keeping a safe distance, signalled her mother to follow, moving stealthily and taking cover whenever possible. As a gentle breeze trailed the brook upstream, Jake and his companion were unaware of their presence, unable to catch their scent from behind. Soon enough Jake and the other left the brook. The ice-cold water of the brook numbed Lily and her mother's legs. Seeking respite, Lily spotted a large rock and motioned for her mother to join her. "This is—wow." Zac chuckled softly. "My grandfather was a big reader. He quoted literature as if he were a human book himself." I turned to look at Zac, my eyes lit up. "Zac, this is amazing."
