he choked out, his voice trembling so hard the wireless earbud slipped from his ear and clattered onto the floorboards beside his head.
I picked up the tiny blue-blinking device with my left hand, jamming it into my own ear. The connection was still live. Through the static of the cheap cellular signal, I could hear the faint, frantic sound of someone breathing over the line. A woman's breath. Sharp, shallow, and fast.
"Miller?" I spoke into the mic, my voice dead, flat, and completely devoid of human warmth.
A long, agonizing silence stretched across the connection. The wind outside seemed to die down for a single second, leaving nothing but the sound of that frantic breathing in my ear.
