I curled up with Chris in his bed as we watched a movie. He’s been worried about me over the past week, which I feel bad about. I hate worrying everyone. I sighed as we watched, “What’s wrong?” Chris asked; I shook my head, but Chris was not about to take that for an answer. He paused the movie and straightened up, waiting for me to talk to him.

Cyrus was right, if I had goals. “Can you use magic to help?” Jane offered. “I can imagine a good grade.” Suddenly, the daunting task seemed attainable. “Esmerelda!” Cyrus and Ghost exclaimed. “What does the pack do for Christmas?” I winked at Jane. “Like what? Having you fix my door knob or set up my Christmas tree?” “Oh, I don’t know. Picking my son up from school, going Christmas tree hunting with us, helping us decorate our tree. Shall I go on?” “All of that was fun,” she said shrugging. “So was fixing your door knob and setting up your Christmas tree,” he said raising his eyebrows and taking a sip of his steaming coffee. “Well, at any rate, thank you,” she said dismissively. “You’re welcome,” he replied, setting his mug down. “And by the way, I’m not sure if Michael mentioned this to you, but Santa Claus is going to be at the library tomorrow.”

Alicia said, hugging me tightly. "Merry Christmas to you too, Alicia," I replied, hugging her back. We sat there for a moment, enjoying the peace and quiet of the night. Then, Barnes poked his head into the room, a twinkle in his eye. "Girls, I think it's time for a little Christmas surprise," he said, a sly grin spreading across his face. Alicia and I exchanged a look, curiosity piqued. What did Barnes have up his sleeve this time? We followed him out into the main room, where the regulars were gathered around the fireplace, singing carols and laughing.

I woke up on the day before Christmas Eve with a strange feeling in my chest—it wasn't anxiety, nor sadness. It was anticipation. There was this event set aside for couples only. People would show up with their love, play games, eat, and have fun. It's a lively thing that happens every Christmas evening. To others, it was just a show, but for me, it was more than that…it was the day I wanted Jax to fall on his knees and beg me to come back.
