My mind stitched itself to the files and the plan and the promise. “We burn his empire to ashes,” I said again. “And then we build something better from the ruins.” She nodded. “Then don’t make me regret trusting you.” I gripped the wheel like a man who held a bomb and a future at the same time. “You won’t.” The phone buzzed on the seat between us. She coughed violently, standing on the curb, wrapped in a neighbor's blanket. Her phone buzzed. Alexander. "Where are you?" he demanded as soon as she answered. "My building. There's a fire. I'm okay." "Stay there. I'm coming." Twenty minutes later, a black sedan pulled up beside the scene. Alexander stepped out, his coat half-buttoned, eyes scanning the crowd until he found her. Relief flooded his face. "Come on," he said, wrapping his coat around her shoulders. "You're staying with me tonight."

Silent. Burning.

Drowned in betrayal. Suffocated by despair.

Mom was busy putting away the materials, so she didn't look up as she said, "Sorry, but we're not taking any more orders today." She turned to me. "Rosie, can you go take a look?" I grunted. Then, I heard a familiar ringtone. I faltered and looked up. I froze when I saw the people at the door. "What are you guys doing here?" Dad's usually cold expression was replaced with joy. He even stumbled a little as he hurried toward us. "I've finally found you and your mother, Rosie. Everyone said you two died in that fire, but I didn't believe it. How could a fire burn a person's body so thoroughly that there weren't even any bones left behind?

Jules didn't realize the burning sensation he felt wasn't just coming from her holding his heart but from the butt of the cigarette pressed into his flannel until she leaned back. The smell of burning fabric made Venus spring back. "Oh my God, Jules." She gasped. He followed her line of sight to the middle of his shirt where her cigarette had burnt a hole right through his flannel as quickly as she moved away she came back. "I'm sorry, Jules I didn't mean— I was just going to tease you with it. I-I didn't mean—" her words were hardly coherent when he stopped her. "It's okay, Venus. I'm okay, see." He said unbuttoning his shirt to reveal his chest. She moved forward hesitantly to see for hers

The blaze flared into the sky. The night filled with smoke and sparks. The stars disappeared in the haze and glowing embers. The historical saloon hotel was shaded by the inferno roaring behind it. The life Lynexia had known and loved, devoured by coruscate. Lynexia stood at the edge of the woods and watched two figures being pushed through the ruins of the entrance to the saloon. They were covered in ash, and they were pale with fear from the building, disappearing inside again. A crack was heard through the screams and flames, and another window exploded. The roof began to buckle as more smoke and sparks sprayed the night sky.
