MATES: REMNANTS OF A BETRAYED BOND
It wasn’t on the agenda, but I cleared my throat and began to sing ‘Howl of Silver Grace,’ the lunar benediction for all wolf kin.
Right away, the audience was utterly captivated. They hummed along with me in a gentle side-to-side sway. Others sang with me, word for word, of history and heart, shedding tears of joy and remembrance.
“Each heart of the pack, the moon’s own child,” I sang, soft and mellifluous. “With every howl, we call her name. The Moon Goddess answers, love untamed.”
“Mate.”
It was a beautiful thing as I finished the rendition and scanned the crowd below, searching for the voice that had made that declaration.
