Claire's POV: As twilight fell, I stood by Carter Thorne's car in the office parking garage, having changed into the emerald gown. He arrived, but not alone. She yanked off her clothes and sneakers, and quickly put on her black velvet skirt, and a white silk blouse. She also took out her faux diamond earrings and put them on. They were cheap, but they worked. She finished the outfit off with black, high-heeled shoes.

There were what seemed like a hundred people already filled across the garden and various activities going off like fire dancers and fire breathers. I found a table to the side that was empty and took a seat. I scoured the gardens and there she was, a bright red dress, mask and shoes, it was Claire right in the middle of the dance floor. I smiled watching her but became very conscious that I was now alone somewhere I knew no one else. Clare was so infectious she already had a large group of people around her dancing and the floor was starting to fill up nicely. I took a slow sip of my drink deciding whether to join her or stay where I was. For now, I do not want to move.

Alex was seated with his back against the door, so he didn’t see Claire when she first came in. Except that Carey, who was sitting opposite him, saw her first. CLAIRE'S POV When I glanced at my phone and saw it was five minutes before 9, I decided to attend Brad's birthday. It won't do any harm to mingle. The dress I chose was a sleek, black off-shoulder gown that hugged my curves just right and stopped mid-thigh, revealing just enough without trying too hard. I paired it with silver stilettos and dangly diamond earrings. My makeup was subtle but polished—smokey eyes, nude lips, and just a hint of highlighter on my cheekbones. I checked my reflection one last time in the mirror and gave myself a curt nod. “You’ve got this, Claire.”
