Mary chimed in.
I sighed heavily. “Is that why you dragged me out?”
“You looked like you needed fresh air,” Mary muttered.
As I raised my head, my gaze caught Chris across the floor. He didn’t notice me—he was on a call, his expression tense. I excused myself and followed quietly.
He headed toward the staircase—hardly anyone used it since the elevator was more convenient. I slipped inside, climbing slowly, listening.
“I’ll get you the money, I promise,” Chris was pleading into his phone. “I just need more time. A week is too short—please, give me a month—”
