"I learned something," he said finally. "About the difference between integrity and certainty. About how you can hold both without letting one undermine the other."
"That's an important thing to learn," I said.
"It is," he agreed, and reached for his coffee, and the evening continued around us, warm and quiet, the house holding all of it in the shape it had always been built to hold.
