Charlie stood quietly at the gate, his small figure almost lost among the crowd. He waited patiently, as he always did, hoping to catch sight of his mom. Usually, she would arrive right away. But today, time stretched longer than usual, and his shoulders began to slump. One by one, his classmates left with their parents. Charlie’s friend waved goodbye cheerfully. “See you tomorrow, Charlie!” Charlie looked up, spotting his closest friend from preschool. He raised his hand to wave back, but his mood was far from cheerful. His wave was slow, his expression glum.

“Friends who text every single morning? Who calls my wife ‘pretty friend’? Yeah. Real friendly.” I placed my hand on Charlie’s chest, feeling how fast his heart was beating under my palm. “Charlie, please. You’re overreacting. Alex has been nothing but nice to me these past months.” Charlie finally looked down at me, but his eyes were still stormy. He forced a tight smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Nice. Right. I’m sure he’s just being nice.”

Charlie pulled Marlie to the side, "I apologize for any inconvenience she may have caused. She is just... " "No, she... she wasn't causing us any trouble," Spark stammered, flashing a smile at Charlie. The change in Spark's demeanor caused his friends to scoff at him. Charlie looked at him with a warm smile that captivated everyone except the cold-hearted Chad. Even after their departure, Spark continued to gaze into the empty space, mesmerized by Charlie's smile. "She smiled... She just smiled at me. " Gideon snapped his fingers to bring him back to reality, and Chad, Ken, and Gideon chuckled, playfully teasing Spark.

Wick was laughing so hard and smiling wider than— Hey, wait a second. Wick was smiling. Wick was freaking laughing. I stared at him, stunned, trying to remember if I’d ever seen him truly, honestly full-out smile before. Or laugh. And most surprising of all, I don’t think I had. So weird. He was beautiful when he smiled. He looked happy and relaxed; I almost wondered if he was the same Wick I’d been living with for the past few weeks. “Hey, bubby,” Charlie finally greeted, rolling over to plaster a loud, smacking kiss to his cheek. “I’ve missed you.”

Wait what? "What?" Charlie asked, "How can I not notice my best friend? She's my best friend for a reason." No duh. He puts an arm around me before grinning like a child, "Of course I'll notice her." Easton snorted, flicking his eyeglasses. "Trust me, you haven't."

“Okay, that was stiff. You two relax.” Click. “Sky, smile like you’re actually excited,” Riley added. Sky smiled wider, teeth starting to ache. Click. “Looks great!” Riley said cheerfully. “Charlie, why don’t you stand next to Sky so I can get a picture of all three of you?” Charlie glanced at Sky and she felt it like a physical thing. The moment his eyes found hers again. The quiet pull. The awareness that made everything else in the room dim. Charlie nodded once. “Okay.” He stepped forward. He did not touch her. He stood close enough that their arms were almost brushing, close enough that she could feel the warmth coming off him.

Charlie exclaimed with the motive of teasing me. It was though not the time that I wished to laugh, provided that my mind still lingered back against the closed door of the staff room assuming everything that could possibly be happening between them; I couldn't help though. I chuckled and maintained my stern face quickly. "Come on dude, laugh if you want laugh, let it out." Added Charlie. "Hmm why don't you see your topper friend! I have heard she is good company, isn't she?" The crawling grin on my lips immediately faded away sooner when her name hit my ears and a gush of anger filled my lungs.

he said with an amused smile. "I wasn't going to." "You almost already did." "I had everything under control." Charlie laughed. "So you keep saying." Lily rolled her eyes dramatically before lightly nudging his shoulder. "You worry too much." "And you don't worry enough." Her friends groaned in mock annoyance. "Will you two stop acting like an old married couple?" someone teased. The group erupted into laughter. Even Lily laughed. She glanced at Charlie with a warmth that needed no explanation. Charlie smiled back, completely unaware that someone was quietly watching from beneath the banyan tree.

Charles rolled his eyes, laughing, Erin continued to make fun of Charles. Seeing my friends happy makes me happy too. It's a feeling I can't quite explain, but it fills my heart with warmth and joy. I'm content sitting at our table , watching my two friends, Erin and Charles, enjoying their conversation. They're there, laughing and sharing stories, completely unaware of the impact they have on me.
