Find out who she's texting. She finishes her coffee. Leaves. I follow her to the grocery store. She's careful. Keeps looking around. Like she knows someone's watching. Smart woman. But not smart enough. I keep my distance. Wear a baseball cap. Sunglasses. Look like every other middle-aged man buying groceries. She picks up milk. Bread. Vegetables. Normal stuff. Then she stops. Turns around. Scans the aisle. Looking for me. I pretend to study a cereal box. She moves to a different aisle.

Alexis shouted, “how will I know who is coming to help us?” “Keep your eyes on the Shadows.” She whispered as she faded away. “What? Keep my eyes on the Shadows? What the hell does that mean?” She whispered to herself. Mary frowned, “Hhhuummmm...I have no idea. I guess we’ll just hafta to keep a lookout.” Mary shrugged with a smile. “Do you still want to go with me?”

Christopher leads me in the direction of a fancy restaurant on the side of the road. But I stop in mid-track as my eyes shift to the fast-food center on the opposite beach corner. "Christopher, can we eat there?" I tug at his hand, stopping him from going further. He turns towards me and looks back to the place where I am pointing. "Fast-food center?" He furrows his eyebrows in confusion.

I didn't want that sort of attention, and so every week I went grocery shopping and ended up trashing them one day at a time. Today, I went shopping again. I was in the frozen aisle when I felt the enticing scent of the human girl. I gritted my teeth and ignored it, throwing several steaks into the cart. For several minutes, I continued to shop without any interruptions. But when I got to the checkout section, I saw her—not the human girl, no. But the mom. Our eyes met as we both walked with our carts down the aisle to get in line. Her eyes quickly widened with recognition, and she smiled.

I turned up the volume of my stereo in an attempt to make sure that Claire didn’t listen. “I don’t recognize the car behind us,” I said calmly and kept my voice low. I pulled into the grocery store since barbecuing seemed to be the best idea for dinner.
