I couldn’t help the blush that coloured my cheeks. “Are you okay? You look red in the face.” Jack looked so concerned it was almost laughable. “I do?” I patted my cheeks like I didn’t know I was feeling hot. “I just feel hot. I’m okay.” I waved it off, hoping my cheeks would cool down. “Why is he taking us though?”

She only realized what she was doing when a burning feeling formed on her cheeks, crawling into her ears and then she put down her hand away. I felt my face heat up instantly. “You always make me blush like that on purpose don’t you,” I shot back, crossing my arms under my breasts so they pushed up against my top. She began eating slowly, taking small bites. Then Xena suddenly asked, “Why is your face so red?” Charlotte happened to be sipping soup and nearly choked. “Slow down,” Xena said gently, walking over with concern. She reached out to touch Charlotte’s forehead. “You feel a little warm. Are you running a fever? Should I take you to the hospital?” Charlotte looked a little awkward and mumbled, “I’m not running a fever.” Xena gave her a puzzled look. “Then why is your face so flushed and hot? Are you feeling unwell?”

Clenching my hands into fists, I took some minutes to calm myself down, but I still couldn't forget his boldness. When I finally turned to face Ash, Kate, and the jewelry crafter, had a strange look on their faces. "What are you staring at me for? Is there something on my face?" I touched my cheeks and felt them burning. "Why are you blushing?" Asher and Kate asked together, both with the same smirk on as Mr. George. I laughed acidly, "I'm not blushing, dumbasses. I'm having a fever! My body is burning, can't you tell?" They didn't seem to believe a word I said.

He stepped closer, too close. “What are you—” Before I could finish, his fingers brushed my cheek. “Are you feeling sick?” he asked, his voice low and strangely tender. My heart stuttered at his touch. “What?” “Your face is flushed and your forehead’s a little damp…” His fingers trailed gently down to my chin, featherlight. A jolt of heat shot through my core, spreading like wildfire beneath my skin. My breath caught. Something was wrong, terribly wrong. I’d felt exhausted all day. My muscles ached. I’d blamed it on the hunt, but now I wasn’t so sure. My skin burned, and my face felt far too hot.

I railed against my subconscious. "Mrs. Woods, why is your face so hot? Do you have a fever?" The moment I heard his voice, my inner conflict ceased. How am I supposed to explain to him I don't have a fever but that my face is getting hot from my irrational thoughts instead? Wait, how does he know my face is hot? As soon as I caught sight of his hand, I realized his palm was resting on my cheek. "Are you insane? At once, remove your hand from my cheek." I yelled in a furious tone.
