LARA's POV The Great Fire of Rome is known as the most devastating blazes in history. Emperor Nero himself set the city on fire... just so he could build a fancy palace on the ashes. Don't quote me, though; I read it once on a sketchy conspiracy forum. But I’ve always wondered why no one who lived through that fire ever wrote a book about it. No How I Escaped the Roman Flames memoir. Now I know why. They were too busy trying to survive.

I'm losing control and I'm seconds away from breathing fire. She slaps me and the fire pushes back a bit. She's glorious in her anger and I can't touch her or I'll never let go. I glance at Mikael. "Control your woman and get her out of here." Pepper tries to run, but Mikael grabs her. Just seeing him touch her pushes smoke from my nostrils and small sparks shoot from my mouth. "Take her away," I roar as I head for my perch where I can release the flames.

A few minutes later we finally got out and the heat of the sun, sand, and cactuses that are higher than us and I can see their big and sharp thorns meet my eyes. I can breathe a sigh of relief because I can no longer smell the small amount of fuel. If we stay there longer, I won't be surprised if I end up coughing even if I don't have one. But I still thought I would suffocate, and I didn't think it was possible to catch fire because there was a slight smell of gasoline in there. Even if it's just gas and not the back, it's still flammable. "What's that road called?" I can't stop asking. In this world, even a path has a name.

"It's a good thing Jacob is gullible. He believed you were in Manhattan even though you didn't return to your aunt's house. But did you shut up the Langham family's driver? Don't let them get a chance to attack you." "Take it easy, I always know what to do before moving forward." At the other end, Ursula let out a long sigh. "You're always playing with fire, Celine. Aren't you ever afraid of getting burned?" "I was already burnt before I even started this, Sula." Celine leaned back comfortably on the chair she was sitting on. Her eyes gazed at the road that seemed to be deserted. The driver who drove her chose to enter the freeway in order to quickly arrive at the place Celine wanted to go.

“Thanks for coming, Zane. I need your help.” His eyebrows lifted slightly, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Help? From me? That’s strange.” He leaned back, crossing his arms. “What’s this about?” I took a breath, keeping Lisa’s warning about my temper in mind. “The fire at the Chicago branch. I’m trying to find out who was behind it. Lisa said you might know something. Someone who could point me in the right direction.” Zane’s smirk faded, his eyes narrowing. “Lisa sent you, huh? Figures she’d drag me into this.”

“What the hell is going on?” “The Chicago building caught on fire and burnt to the ground last night. I just got the call. Dean, everything’s destroyed.” “Shit, are you kidding me, Phil? Do they know what started it?” “The firefighters are saying that it was arson,” he said. I shook my head and ran my hand through my hair as I dialed my pilot. “Change of plans, we’re flying to Chicago first and then New york,” I told him. “Let’s go and see how many millions of dollars I just lost.”

Cassian POV The firefighters were able to put out the fire in the library before it burned down the entire building, but between the flames, the smoke, and the water used to put it out, we lost three-quarters of the books. The head librarian, Marianne, was barely able to hold back her tears at the town meeting when we heard the reports. “We weren’t able to find any source for the fire,” our Fire Chief, Taylor, finished, folding his arms. “No accelerants were found, but the way it spread couldn’t have been natural, either.”

I may not have much but I'd like to keep a hold on my dignity. I kick a small pebble that skitters into the darkness of the pavement as I walk down, I hear festive sounds coming from the pub at the end of this street but I ignore it. No use hoping to have something you never will. Even though I have magical blood, I'm a fire slifer. I have no clue how to harness my power so it's basically useless. I've only had one or two incidents of nearly burning a house down but other than that I feel basically human.

She had been writing about what came after. That was the second book. Not the year — the year was the first book, complete and in the world and doing what it had been written to do. The second book was what came after the year. What it meant to live in the after. How the woman who had found herself in the fire continued to find herself, every day, in the ordinary life that the fire had produced. How the settling was not an arrival but a practice. How the choosing was daily and not dramatic. How the marriage that had been rebuilt was not finished being rebuilt — would perhaps never be finished, which was not a failure but a feature.

If this went on, it would be flooding everywhere. And when that happened, Blazewing and I would end up drowning right here in this cellar. I shared my thoughts with him, and he agreed it made sense. "We have to get out of here and move above ground," I said. He bit his lip. "I know. We can't stay down here. But the heat outside is brutal. If we move up, we'll just burn alive instead." He lowered his head while he spoke, "I'm sorry, I can't give you a better life. If you had chosen Snowviper back then—"
