Xander grew agitated, his lopsided mouth twitching harder. “I… I don’t need her pity!” “Good. Hold on to that pride.” Chris scooped another spoonful of soup and brought it to his father’s lips. “Take care of yourself. We can only rely on ourselves now.” Mr. Xander swung his arm, knocking the entire bowl of chicken soup out of Chris’s hands. The soup splashed all over Chris. Shaking with rage, Mr. Xander was so furious he couldn’t even get the words out. Mrs. Xander quickly reached for tissues, trying to dab at Chris’s shirt.

He looked at Agatha and Calista in turn. Agatha and Calista exchanged glances, then nodded together. "It's so good! Are you used to cooking by yourself?" Chris smiled widely when he heard that. "Thankfully. It's not that often, but I've cooked for myself a few times when I wanted something to eat." Agatha nodded in understanding. Then the three of them continued their breakfast. Until a few minutes later, the plate that was originally full, was now empty again.

“He might run. His girlfriend is dead, remember? We have nothing on him.” I sighed, leaning in to grab a slice for myself, the hot cheese stretching between my fingers. “He wouldn’t dare. I trust him. He’s loyal to me.” “Chris, where are your damn manners?” Xander’s voice cut sharp, his eyes on me as he pushed the food cart right in front of me. “You fed yourself but not the lady? What kind of bodyguard are you?” Chris just groaned, chewing louder like an asshole. I bit into my slice, the taste hitting my tongue, salty, greasy, spicy. Not the kind of food I grew up on, but hell, it was good enough. Junk or not, it filled me.

Chris said, scratching his neck. “Yeah! Thanks to you I had to learn how to cook some things and even burnt myself in the process.” Chris suddenly got the basin with the fries and approached the deep fryer. “How about you sit? I’ll make them for you,” he offered. Rita giggled and went to sit on a stool at the island in the middle of the kitchen, watching Chris as he dropped the fries into the deep fryer. He was shirtless and only wore a black short. There was just something sexy about a shirtless man cooking in the kitchen.

Chris turned toward me slowly. And God. The look he gave me almost made me shrink into the seat. His jaw was tight, his eyes dark and unreadable, but there was something else there too. Something intense enough to make my heartbeat stutter. “You really enjoyed yourself with him that much?” he asked quietly. The question caught me completely off guard. “What?” “With Xander.” I stared at him in confusion. “He was just being friendly.” Chris let out a dry laugh that sounded anything but amused. “Friendly?”

Jean shook her head, looking up at the sky. Placing my hand on her shoulder, I squeezed it. I knew this was a touchy subject for her. Her mate, Chris, was a wonderful chef. He was from another pack and moved to ours probably twenty years or so ago. After working a few different restaurants in the area, Chris and Jean opened up Ochoa. It was a higher end restaurant but they kept the prices low by using the local growers of the pack. It was and still is the best restaurant in the whole of the territory.

"Thanks to you, my reputation is about to soar to a whole new level." Alex drained his glass, rose, and patted Chris on the shoulder. Without you, I would have been dead six years ago."

Just then, an impish grin crossed Lucas’s face as he turned toward Chris. “So, Chris,” he said, leaning in slightly, “if you ever find yourself needing a personal chef, I’m your guy. I make a mean grilled cheese, too, you know.” Chris raised an eyebrow, a bemused smile playing on his lips. “Grilled cheese, huh?”

Chris extended his hand to which Asrar happily filled. Chris quickly introduced himself to which Asrar was happy with. Chris was the man overlooking the work being done at his new restaurant.
