Shaking with fear, I hid in the far corner. When I was thirsty, I ate snow. When I was hungry, I slept. The frostbite sores flared up. The pain had me crying every day. Whenever I heard footsteps, I dragged the stiff body in front of me like a shield. That was how I spent two days. Next to a corpse. My hair was a total mess, knotted everywhere. My clothes were filthy. I looked like I'd been living on the street for years. On Christmas Eve, I finally dragged myself out to beg for food.

The room glowed with the warm and inviting light, casting a glow that seemed to capture the essence of the holiday. They held hands in a circle, each person sharing what they were grateful for and offering prayers and wishes of love and peace. The burning candles and soft music created an atmosphere of calmness and togetherness. It was a moment of reflection, a pause in time, where the true meaning of Christmas embraced their hearts.

A lady wearing a dark woolen cloak with flaming red hair asked, “What would you say to the creator?” I wipe my tears of laughter as I look her in the eyes. She is very pale, with gothic makeup and soulful eyes. I sense that I can be honest with her. “Well, first,it's brilliant. It reflects the dark side of this holiday. It shows the enslavement of reindeer, the oppression of elves and the self-serving nature of one man who takes all of the credit. Also, I'm glad there isn't a cross or a baby Jesus in sight.”

I'd try my best, even though it's my first Christmas without Dean, since we aren't too big on holidays or relatives in general. Christmas was a sordid affair, dad and mum in a subdued mood as Felix Navidad came up in the speakers. Dean's favorite Christmas song, and he shows it by moving his body, so out of tune with the beat, it was downright funny. His chicken wings dance, and his almost perfect imitation of a rooster. I smiled sadly, cleaning my tears with the back of my hands. Dad and mum held on to each other, singing along to Silent Night the tears falling freely from their faces. Everyone laughed when I made the announcement. Our table was joined by two girls and three guys. I got up and cleared the way for them, saying, "It is not a must that we spend our Christmas with family, friends, and relatives, expressing thanks and love. Christmas simply means to rejoice, and you may rejoice with us tonight. I know everyone has a distinct story. Some have parted from their parents, some have migrated here, some have been in unexpected situations, some have experienced heartache, and so on. Christmas is a time of renewal and healing for you.
