Christmas break was just around the corner. A high school group chat that had been dead for years suddenly became lively again. Messages flooded in by the hundreds within minutes. Some people talked about how excited they were to reunite, while others sighed nostalgically about how beautiful those years had been. The class president sent me a private message again, insisting that I attend no matter what. I had ignored every invitation before, but this time, I agreed. Because I wanted to see what they looked like once they failed and had nothing left.

The High Citadel was no longer a monument to solar perfection; it was a Galactic Lightning Rod. High above, the Harvester hadn't left; it had multiplied. Six more crystalline structures had de-cloaked, forming a geometric "Halo" around the planet. They weren't siphoning yet; they were Calibrating.

“It is Christmas.” I stared at her in horror. “I have been smiling. Internally.” “No, you have been glaring at everything with open hostility.” “That is how I smile.” Her sigh sounded like the end of hope itself. “Just hang these.” I took the basket, grudgingly, and stalked toward the main hallway. Wolves hustled past carrying giant wreaths that could double as shields. Someone shouted for more ribbon. Someone else shouted for less ribbon. A pup ran by dragging a tangle of lights that looked like it had eaten three smaller strings and gained sentience.

Sophie stood in the middle wearing reindeer antlers and the biggest smile. "There you are! Dad's getting the tree. We have so much to do." The front door opened and Derek and Jason carried in the biggest Christmas tree I'd ever seen. Derek's eyes found mine across the room and held for just a second. Long enough that my coffee mug suddenly felt too hot. "Morning, Maya," he said, voice still rough. "Morning."

He scowled at me but there was no real bite in it. "Which one do you want?" It took a split second for me to realize he was going to let me choose something. My grin widened as I eagerly looked around at my options. I knew I was acting like a child but that's what this festival did to you. It brought out your inner child and what was more of a perfect time for that than Christmas. And add on to the fact Knox was being very sweet by winning me something. "I'll take Rudolph." I pointed to the kinda smaller reindeer hanging by himself. The older man working the booth handed him over with a kind smile as I held two stuffed animals in my arms.

“She is Helena—” “I am Damon. Damon Blackwood, Aria. No one comes close.” She nodded. “Fine, but would you touch my mother's company?” I reached for her face and cupped her cheeks, brushing her lips. “No. I promise not to touch your mother's legacy.” She smiled and sat back on the bed. “Thanks babe. For everything. For standing by me and for everything. I ruffled her hair and she giggled, throwing her head back. “You're too much, you know?” She asked me. I nodded before going back to continue my work from where I'd stopped.

The world was silent, as if isolated from the mortal realm. Carl stopped walking and slowly raised his eyes, his pitch-black pupils suddenly sharpening as he gazed at the gray sky. To ordinary eyes, the sky still looked as it should in the morning—mist swirling, the first light of dawn faintly shining. But in his vision, an invisible Rule Halo was slowly gathering above the firmament. That halo was neither gold nor white, without substance or form, yet it contained a vast and overwhelming pressure that could suppress all ages and rule all things. It held no emotion, no warmth, cold as eternal ice, pressing down heavily upon him from above.

"I asked her if she was coming and she said that she's here." "Okay, thanks," Caden replied, rushing off. "I'll find her!" He searched the crowd, looking at every face, and hoping beyond all hope that he found Jocelyn. Then the parade started, and huge floats passed around the town square. Santa's Workshop, complete with elves who were throwing out candy; Rudolf heading up Santa's sleigh; but the one he liked the most was a manger scene with Santa kneeling before the baby Jesus, placing a gift at His feet. But Caden kept scanning the crowd, looking for Jocelyn.
