A servant boy drops the box he was holding and dives beneath one of the carriages, trembling. The stench of fear rises around me as we all simultaneously retreat. But trolls keep coming. They are massive, twice the height of any man, their bodies made of something that looks like living stone. Moss clings to their shoulders, and their eyes glow faintly like burning embers. Each step they take makes the earth groan. “Stay back!” one of the knights barks, drawing his sword. “I don't think they are going to listen to him,” Pip whispers, poking her head from my scarf.

Yet here I was, forced to swallow the unimaginable. Satisfied that she had quenched a thirst I never had, Selene pressed a book into my hands. One glance at the cover made my heart sink. Trolls. Of course it had to be trolls. In that instant, I understood Kael’s disdain for the entire franchise. This girl’s obsession was unlike anything I had ever witnessed. It coated her world—her words, her shelves, even the Princess Poppy hair ties woven into her braids. She could walk into a boardroom tomorrow and sell their brand better than any professional, all without knowing she was doing it.

So I lifted the gravitational pressure pulling them down, expecting them to run to me, but they fell even more on their knees. The trolls did eventually run to me to attack. It was a funny sight to behold. Blood was oozing out of every crevice, every hole in their body, yet they remained willful and persistent. It only widened my grin.

Of course, Orison has something romantic playing on the screen because it’s freaking Christmas. “Dad, I can’t today,” I tell him, and just then, I come face to face with the television screen, and I freeze, my jaw going slack right as my heart comes to halt and drops to the bottom of my stomach. I can’t be seeing right. “Honey,” Dad calls, but my ears have started ringing with the amount of blood that rushes to the organs. I don’t believe in the holidays, but please Santa, please! Tell me that Orison has started a career in pornography, because I can see him on a live field, having sex with someone who isn’t me.

When Noah Levine came back, Christmas had already passed. I'd thrown that reindeer lingerie into a street trash bin. "Babe, I left in such a rush last night that I forgot to give you your Christmas present." He pulled out a sapphire necklace and swept my hair aside to fasten it around my neck. Because he leaned in so close, I could clearly see the red marks on his neck and smell the sickly sweet perfume that obviously wasn't his. Akillim, shifting his strength from his sprinting dinner, to the elf beside him. "I thought I told you clearly to stay far away from me?" Folding both his arms, he looks beyond her beautiful woven red hair, into her oval shaped blue eyes, anticipating an answer.

When Grumpy jumps into action, the troll jumps in as well, attempting to defend the small ones. “Noro! " Through gritted teeth, Charlotte demands, but the halflings refuse to abandon the fight. It's nearly hard to fight off the trolls when swords clash, and the enormous troll comes crashing down in an attempt to murder Charlotte in a split second. An arrow suddenly flies through the air and strikes the big troll square in the face. “Legolas! Behind the struggling troll, Mr. Trumpet cheers. When Charlotte heard the name, she felt anxiety, nervousness, and anguish in her veins that she couldn't describe, but she didn't pay any mind to it because she didn't know them.

“Operation Sparkle-and-Heal begins now!” They pull me to my feet, guiding me toward my room with an enthusiasm I can’t help but feel warmed by.
