I stood frozen, chest heaving, eyes burning with unshed tears.
Suddenly, warmth enveloped my shaking hands. I blinked, vision clearing to see Atlas standing in front of me, his broad shoulders blocking Nova from view. His fingers laced through mine, warm and strong, grounding me like an anchor in a storm.
“Leave her alone,” he said quietly, voice calm but holding a violence that made my skin prickle. Nova’s smirk faltered, her eyes narrowing before she spun on her heel and stalked away, hair whipping behind her.
Atlas turned to me, squeezing my hands gently. His sliver eyes searched my face with something I couldn’t name. Concern? Anger? Something deeper?
