But Atlas couldn’t stop thinking about the man in the garden. The sunlight in his hair. How cute his eyes were, when he looked up. The strange jolt in Atlas’s chest. Something about that moment felt important. Like the beginning of something he didn’t understand yet. Philip suddenly leaned forward again.

I barely paid attention to the stunning beauty around me. Atlas took me up to the top floor and into a spacious suite. He settled me on the couch and handed me a stack of project documents with detailed descriptions. I glanced at him. He shrugged, motioning for me to look. With that, he turned to leave. Only then did I relax, reading the documents. It hooked me after the first page, and I immediately fell into a trance. Unknowingly, the sky had darkened. Atlas walked in once again and turned on the light. He had a server beside him who was pushing a cart full of dinner.

I was lost in my thoughts when Atlas walked inside the room and sprawled on the couch in his expensive suit. Perfect. Why not have some fun? “You know Hazel, if you came on date with me that night then I would’ve never let you go. You’d have been my girlfriend and imagine how badass couple we would’ve been, working as detectives in the crime branch who were once High school’s sweetheart.” I grinned. Atlas scowled. “If you think that your words will earn any reaction from me then sorry to burst your bubbles.” I laughed. “Right. I forget that now you’re fucking her.”

A moo snarl thunders in his chest. “We are never nothing, Nyx. Not you and me.” “Just don’t, Atlas,” I answer, his words cutting through my chest and straight into my heart which is all as well willing to drop for him. “Fine, but I know that look,” Chart book demands, pulling my chin up so he can see me in the eyes. I was sitting in silk sheets eating while Marcus was rotting and Theo was losing his mind in a hotel room. My phone buzzed on the mattress. I didn't have to look to know it was Theo. I didn't touch it. "I have to travel this morning," Atlas said, checking his watch. "Important work, even for a Saturday. I’ll be back before you know it." He leaned in close, his shadow falling over me. He didn't go for my mouth. He whispered right against my ear, his breath hot enough to make my skin crawl in the best way. "Stay home and rest. I want you recovered by the time I get back." He nipped my ear hard. "Because the second I walk through that door, I’m going to unravel you all over again."

She stared at him. And for the first time in years, she didn’t see the man who destroyed her. She saw the man who once held her at midnight in a library and whispered her name like it meant something. “Why the marriage?” she asked softly. “Why force me to marry you?” Atlas stepped closer, eyes locked with hers. “Because I don’t trust you.” “And marrying me will fix that?” “No,” he said. “But keeping you close will help me find out who you really are now. And maybe… maybe I want to see if there’s anything left of the girl I used to love.”

“How did I not know about this place?” He smirked. “I figured you’d like it.” She wandered between the shelves, running her fingers along the spines of books, feeling something inside her settle. Atlas watched her, a small smile on his lips. “You look at books the way some people look at home.” Lily swallowed. “Maybe that’s what they are.” Atlas nodded. “Then maybe that’s your answer.” She frowned. “To what?” “To what’s next.” Lily stared at him, something clicking into place.
