It felt good—light, like a breath of fresh air in this park where the wind rustled the leaves around us. We sat on the bench after that, side by side, our shoulders almost touching. He started telling these silly jokes—the kind that weren’t even funny, just dry and ridiculous, like “Why did the scarecrow win an award? Because he was outstanding in his field.” Corny as hell. But I laughed anyway, hard and genuine, because the real joke was how bad they were, how he delivered them with that straight face like he thought they were gold. It warmed me up inside, chasing away the chill for a bit.

I laughed, knowing that I had hit a sensitive spot. But then, Sophia suddenly looked up at me, a sly grin spreading across her face. They were good, I'll give 'em that,” he made a face. “But the host kept making these cringy jokes that totally killed the mood.” Amber burst out laughing. “Cringy jokes, huh?” she teased, pretending to wipe a tear from her eye. “I bet they weren't as bad as your puns.”

"No, a cow says mooooo", I burst out laughing clapping my hands together and banging the floor with the heels of my foot as I cackled loudly. He chuckled as well more on me laughing than the actual joke. I clutched my stomach in pain and I wipe the tears that escaped my eye. " Now it's your turn", I said to him still chuckling a little and he shook his head.

"You sure look better now." "And you look... worse." As far as jokes went, it was a lame joke, one that would not have made anyone event crack a smile normally, but it somehow managed to crack us both up. A second later, Silas and I were laughing like loons, laughing our heads off, clutching the counter to keep from toppling over. Silas stopped to burp and that set us both off again. Silas's unsteady hands poured us both a large glass of whisky.

When my joke lands she tilts her head back to laugh, shaking her head as she looks at me. "You're ridiculous." She says. "You're smiling." I respond. She gives me that warm look again and I wonder what's going through her mind at this moment. "You got any other ones?" She asks and I wrack my brain for any other dad jokes. "Um... The circus lion ate the clown but didn't finish." I say. "Why?" She asks. "Because he tasted funny." I respond and Harper chuckles again. "More." She teases, but I just shrug.

"Hugo, did you hear that? She told me to think about the consequences. Oh, I'm so scared." Only when she'd had her fill of laughing did she turn back to face me. "Jillian, what makes a swindling fake socialite like you think you can act so high and mighty in front of me?" she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I'm doing the world a favor by making sure you don't go out and prey on other men." I had completely lost my patience.

He grins. “One moment they are ‘fuck you youngest child’ and in the next they want us to produce the next population of the country. It’s like ‘make up your mind will ya? Are we important or not?’”, He continues joking, eyes lighting up when he hears me chuckle a second time. “Yeah, literally”, I agree, having to lower my eyes. I feel far too ashamed. I not only chuckled at one of his jokes, but at two of them. And I did so because I actually found them funny.
