"I guess we won't be having dinner after all." I'd found a luxurious cottage house a few weeks ago. It was twenty miles outside of Scarletville. It was for rental, but three days ago, I made a deal with the owner and bought it. I knew that Nova would love it and that it would be perfect for our date… I wasn't planning that we would end up here after dinner, but I was hoping we would.

She barely lifted her eyes from the wooden floor. She looked like a frightened rabbit. Not salvation. Not hope. Certainly not a Rona "brimming with life." She couldn't even keep a flower alive. Over the years, Crescent Cove has become a haven for those chasing a slower life—people burnt out from city chaos seeking peace, a sea change, or just a place where time moves a little slower.

I settled on a small coastal town about three hours north, the kind of place that catered to tourists in summer but would be quiet this time of year. I booked a cottage right on the water, secluded and private with its own beach access, the kind of place where we could walk outside without worrying who might see us. The photos showed weathered wood and large windows facing the ocean, a fireplace and kitchen and a bed big enough for both of us to actually sleep in. It cost more than was reasonable for two nights but I didn't care, I would have paid anything for the chance to wake up next to Robin without immediately calculating how long I could stay before someone noticed I was gone.
