Charlotte had a dream, in which she was a rabbit, suddenly kissed by a sheep that was eating grass. The sheep looked at her apologetically and even gave up its grass for her to eat. Just as Charlotte thought this was a polite gentleman sheep, the sheep suddenly stood up and ripped itself open, and then she saw a wolf crawl out from the sheepskin, staring at her with red glowing eyes. Charlotte had just prepared to run when she was suddenly pinned down by a wolf. The wolf hooked its paw around her waist and pulled her back, pressing her to the ground, and began to lick her over and over.

"If you want to read, go ahead." She hesitated. "Are you sure?" His lips quirked slightly, amused by the question. "I wouldn’t have offered if I wasn’t." Elena turned back to the shelf, her eyes scanning the titles before finally settling on a familiar one. Animal Farm. One of the few books she’d read over and over as a child, long before the world had turned cruel. She clutched it to her chest and settled onto the couch closest to Asher’s desk, curling her legs under her.

Reasonable. The kind usually intended for children who could sit upright. God. Not babies who occasionally sneezed at random. Fair. Then Lily sat directly in front of Peanut. Reasonable. Opened the book. God. And school began. Fair. "A." Reasonable. Peanut stared. God.

Phobos pipes in telling me of his doubts about my accomplishment of his exercise. Grinding my teeth I claw on it and adding pressure to it has a piece pop up from the page. I startle dropping the book to the grass floor, caught off guard. Peering in I see fur peeking from underneath the piece. Time is running out. Taking a small breath I slowly tear the piece from the book. It comes off easily as if it was meant to whilst uncovering a small picture of four baby wild hares sleeping in a basket. There weren't merely four hares but eight.

We were trained to fight both. I closed my eyes and started counting the scales on the dragon's body. I never liked to count sheeps. As the sheep was my favorite food. I always felt hungry whenever I counted sheeps. So my dad told me to count scales on the dragon's body instead. It was reliable and very helpful. And my stomach never growled again while counting so I could have a goodnight sleep.

Debra crossed her arms. Andrew's smile didn't falter. "Once upon a time, there was a shepherd boy. He was bored while watching his sheep, so he decided to play a prank. He shouted, 'Wolf! Wolf!' The villagers dropped everything and rushed to help, only to find out the boy had lied. The second time, he played the same trick, and again, the villagers came running. This time, they were furious to be deceived. Finally, a real wolf came. The boy cried for help, louder than ever, but no one came. He and his sheep were left to the wolf."

I whispered with a loving smile, "which story would you like tonight?" Mathew's face lit up with excitement, his tiny hands reaching for his favorite book. "The one about the brave little wolf, Mumma!" I chuckled as I opened the book, a captivating story about a young wolf's grand adventure. Mathew listened with rapt attention, his eager eyes fixed on the pages as I spun the tale of bravery and exploration. By the time I reached the part where the little wolf found solace under the silvery glow of the moon, my son was already fast asleep.

As I walked out, I could feel his eyes burning a hole into my back. *** “The fly ran away in fear of the frog, who ran from the cat, who ran from the dog. The dog ran away, in fear of the pig, who ran from the cow, she was so big! The cow ran away from the fox, who ran as fast as he could in fear of the man. The man heard a thump, and away he ran! It was just a sheep, with an old tin can!” I closed the book in my lap—the twin’s favorite bedtime story I brought along so I could read to them—and said softly, “The end.”

Three-year-old Theo, with his curious eyes and tousled hair, snuggled up close, his little hand reaching out to touch the colorful illustrations on the pages. "Once upon a time in a faraway land," Mama Hazel began, her voice gentle and melodic, "there lived a playful fox named Oliver. He had a bright orange coat and a mischievous twinkle in his eye." Theo's eyes widened in wonder as he listened intently, captivated by the tale unfolding before him.
