Inside the kitchen, I put the backpack on the table. I looked around and whistled once, but the dogs didn’t come barking from anywhere. I stood in the open door and looked across the fields when I saw the glint. I was on my stomach crawling on the kitchen floor as bullets ripped through the windows and into the walls around me.

Stone walls, grey and familiar, webbed with new, dark lines—cracks that pulsed faintly, as if something within them breathed. Those same cracks exhaled oily mist that writhed along the mortar, snaking into doorways, seeping under thresholds. Wolves stumbled through it, coughing, eyes watering. Some shook their heads and pushed on. Others froze where they stood, pupils dilating, muscles locking as if strings had been cut. A pup—six moons at most—stood in an inner hallway, pressed against the wall, tiny claws digging grooves into stone, eyes huge and wild as a shadow-laced mist curled past her.

I woke up to the scent of damp earth and the soft rustle of leaves. The sky above was pale, framed by towering trees that seemed to stretch forever. Ahead of me, a massive wall loomed, built entirely of interlocked tree trunks, its surface rough and intimidating. Skulls of beasts adorned the top like grim sentinels, their hollow eyes staring down at me. Scrawled across the structure in jagged black lettering, formed from ash and bone, was one word: KREEL.

But the swarm thickened, pressing harder, faster, the commander’s shadow looming closer with each step. Then the commander raised its hand once more. The earth trembled. Cracks split the ground at the base of the wall, jagged lines racing outward like veins of darkness. From the fissures, more shapes clawed free—creatures larger, their limbs plated with jagged bone. They slammed against the wall with such force the stones groaned. Darien cursed. “The wall won’t hold that, Kaelen!” Kaelen’s grip tightened on the spear. His mind raced. If the wall collapsed, the village would be laid bare. No defenses. No retreat.

Darrion told him the creatures were Moostet, and Jai mentioned something about them looking similar to meerkats and that they’re too cute to hunt these bunnies.
