"Possibly," Paoli shrugged. "It's worth a try."
Emily slowly stepped toward the table and paused to pull the cross from her pocket. "Okay," she agreed. "But I'm going to hold this in my other hand in case you get…I don't know...hungry at me," she warned.
Paoli quickly smothered a grin. "All right," he agreed seriously. "But I promise not to get hungry at you."
She slid back into the chair and held her hand out across the table. In her other hand, she gripped the cross so tightly her knuckles were white. She was very aware of William's presence behind her, now supportive instead of entrapping.
