I fall to the ground, palms wrapped around my head as I struggle to contain the terror that eats at me. A familiar face comes into view. Kael Storm. All black haired glory, piercing hazel eyes sparking with fury and cold intensity, lean muscular build towering over me as his arm snakes around my waist and pulls me in roughly. The curse. The doom. The marking. The darkness. All of it commingles in powerful waves that become too difficult to bear. More tears free fall down my face, sobs rack my chest, and breathing becomes too much of a luxurious activity for me to handle.

"The curse is real." "No," I said desperately. "What do you mean, this isn't me!" "Four hours," Dante whispered, looking directly at me. "You've been here four hours and I'm already dying." "What do you mean by that? and if you think so, is this how curses work?" "Isn't it?" Soren asked coldly. "Your first mate died in a hunting accident. Random attack. Your second mate got killed by rogues. Random attack. The third mate just dropped dead. Random death."

Her thoughts felt tangled, pulling her in directions she did not want to follow. “You do not know what I am,” she said. “No,” he agreed. “But neither do you.” That unsettled her deeply. Elsewhere in the fortress, Alaric stood alone in his private chamber, staring out into the night. He had left Elysia’s room because remaining there had become dangerous. Not to her, but to himself. The curse lay beneath his skin as it always had, a constant presence he had learned to live with. It was absolute. It did not warn. It did not fail. It killed instantly and without exception.

But that image soon warped, replaced by him coughing and choking as my eyes crossed the next line: "...bleed to death..." Blood. So much blood. I squeezed my eyes shut and inhaled

A freak accident that left me completely alone in the world. But now, I couldn’t help but wonder. Were they werewolves too? Had they known this would happen to me? Alaric said the curse didn’t activate unless you killed someone. If they were werewolves, had they never triggered the curse? Or was it something else entirely? I glanced at the window, where the light of the setting sun was fading, giving way to the night. The full moon was coming. I could feel it—a strange hum at the back of my mind, growing stronger with each passing moment.

Death draws me towards it like we have been attached with an unbreakable string. Maybe it's just a superpower in which I get the last chance to save the person in front of me or maybe it’s a curse. Particularly a Crimson curse, as I like to call it. Through the years the number of deaths I have seen is greater than my age. You would think that death doesn't affect me anymore. You are right to think that because that is what I had thought until 5 days ago.
