I'm at the supermarket when an old woman I don't know suddenly grips my hand tightly. I instinctively shield my baby bump, but she says, "Someone has placed a swap spell on you. The dead baby is about to be transferred to your body soon." I think she's a liar, but she says, "Hurry up and try to make yourself vomit. You should try to throw up as much of that fish you just ate as you can."

Her thoughts felt tangled, pulling her in directions she did not want to follow. “You do not know what I am,” she said. “No,” he agreed. “But neither do you.” That unsettled her deeply. Elsewhere in the fortress, Alaric stood alone in his private chamber, staring out into the night. He had left Elysia’s room because remaining there had become dangerous. Not to her, but to himself. The curse lay beneath his skin as it always had, a constant presence he had learned to live with. It was absolute. It did not warn. It did not fail. It killed instantly and without exception.

I looked at each box again and they were still in that order. Now that I have that little pearl of wisdom I realized how sad this girl’s life has been. I wonder really, what is it that she did that was so bad that she was cursed like this? In most of her poems, or in most of her many lives she was constantly cursing her fate. And I think that in most of them she died very young as we look for her obituaries. I honestly wonder what sin she could have committed. The blood poem isn’t something that I could really make sense of.
