I let out a peal of surprised laughter as he damsel-carries me out of the kitchen and up the stairs. “Where are we going?” I giggle. “You’ll see,” he answers, pushing open a door at the end of a long hallway.

I can see it. I know where you are. And I know where Uncle Voss is too.”

I thought Dad was finally going to grieve for me. I thought he would rush over and hold me tight. Excited, I drifted to his side, wanting to nuzzle his arm like a kitten. But what happened next plunged me right back into an icy abyss. After taking a deep breath, Dad screamed at my corpse with all his might, "You little brat! He held my hand tighter and then stepped away from us. "Nothing is going to happen." He again said the words more to himself, I gathered. I knew his brothers wouldn't put me in danger again. But still, I nodded. Dagon grabbed the door handle to the dungeons. There were no guards here and I didn't hear any sound from beyond the doors. We both looked at him, standing shoulder to shoulder. Maybe they would let me do this with Dagon.

“There’s something else.” Adom burst into the room, calling, “Dad, Papa, I played in the sandbox and grandpa helped me build a castle that was this high!” He gestured expansively with his arms, attempting to demonstrate just how large the castle had been. “And then I found some ants, and I went down the slide, and I got a rock in my shoe, and then we came home.” “Mm,” Ash replied, sitting forward to offer Adom his undivided attention. “Is your foot okay sweetheart?”
