Thankfully, I dodge it, having already seen it coming. “You’ve really disappointed me this time, Damon. Is this what we taught you? To shirk your responsibilities? What were you even thinking?” “I—It wasn’t like that. I had my reasons—” “Reasons?” Grandpa cuts me off sharply, stepping closer, his eyes blazing. “Your reasons don’t matter when your family is suffering! Do you think excuses can fix a sick child or ease your wife’s fear?”

A high-pitched scream cut through the air. Grandma, who was supposed to be crippled, jumped up from her wheelchair. She leaped several feet away with nimble movements, wiping the icy water with her hands while a string of curses exploded from her lips. "You damned bastard, Jasper Saldano! Are you trying to freeze me to death?" she exclaimed while coughing. "It's so cold!" Ashton stood rooted to the spot while still holding the golf club. The corner of my lips curled up into a sarcastic smile as I clapped. "Well, would you look at that? It seems that your leg is all better now, Grandma."

I bit down hard on my tongue to stop any groans from escaping. "Grandpa Eddie, I... I just miss you guys and wanted to hear your voices," I said, trying my best to sound as cheerful as possible.

“Please, I beg you. Please give it back. The crucifix is important to me.” Rachel and the other household staff member in the back took delight in my humbling. She plucked my chin with her toes. “That’s not a lot of begging. Bark for me. Since you’re such a lapdog, act like one and convince me.” I had never been so humiliated. They know they have wound Grandpa up having barely been here five minutes, and will no doubt be updating Dad as soon as they can.
