I couldn't stop staring at the center of the field. At Danny. He was enormous. He'd always been big, but standing there now in the afternoon sun, he looked like something that was built in a lab specifically to cause damage. Wall of muscle. Scar along his left cheek. Same smirk he'd been wearing since we were kids. Less than ten feet away from me. My jaw locked.

My two younger brothers, Nathan and Noah, were on the fields, training with David, Nadia and Gamma Danny. Danny is our older cousin. Jonathan stood at the cemetery, his hands buried deep in his pockets. Geoffrey had just placed fresh flowers on the grave. Jonathan stared at the engraved name: “Danny Golden.” He watched a small ant crawl up the cold concrete. A memory flickered in his mind like an old film reel. He traveled back to a time when Danny was still alive. He had been a lively, cheerful man, and Jonathan’s father had loved him for his positive spirit. His father often said Danny was the reason he never gave up on his dreams; it was Danny's words that had helped bring the Walter building to life.

It seems the kid had learned some caution, at least. “Boss?” Danny’s voice was young, and uncertain. “You wanted to see me?” I turned slowly, letting him sweat for a moment. He was twenty, maybe twenty-one. Scrawny. And very nervous. This was the kid who’d let Rylan escape a week ago. “Come here,” I said. Danny approached like he was walking to the gallows. His hands were shaking. I let the silence stretch, watching him squirm. Then I smiled. “Good work.”

"Oh yea" I responded as I traced my fingers over his hard chest. "I'm going to join the Pearl Moon Park and run the training facility on the edge of the territory." he told me kissing the top of my head.
