“I don’t either, but do you have any better ideas? We can’t let the Blue Moon pack be taken over this way. It isn’t right. They are hiring rogues to attack an allied pack. That is a bigger werewolf crime than almost any out there.” Long silence. “I don’t have any better ideas.” “Ok, then.” “Here’s that t-shirt,” Danny said, handing it to me. I smiled sexily at Danny and headed into the bathroom, along with my purse and phone. “Thank you. I will be right back.”

Darwin double-checks the contents of the backpack given by Randy, which he will use for the upcoming Mount Hallasan hike in a little while. He reexamines the items inside, such as a compass, folding knife, small flashlight, disposable raincoat, multipurpose bag, walkie-talkie, water bottle, some snacks, and, of course, a first aid kit. Even though this climb isn't all the way to the summit and isn't like what professional climbers typically do, Darwin still needs to prepare everything thoroughly. Anticipating both good and bad scenarios they might encounter on the journey.

"Shit, we need to fucking go." Dex grunted, spitting out a wad of blood as he hurried to the back of the minivan. The back window was shattered from the roll, making it easy for him to reach in and grab two backpacks filled to the brim. I went a little wide eyed when he wrenched open a duffel bag full of various fire arms and types of silver ammunition. It was somewhat comforting to know that despite his usual jolly demeanor, his intimidating looks weren't just for show. He tossed one of the backpacks at Kade, and within seconds, was urging us to leave.

Yet I know as the car starts to move, that Darnell isn’t taking me to the Dark Phantom pack, he is taking me somewhere completely different. As the car builds up speed, I look inside the bag on my lap, my eyes widening at the midnight blue silky dress. He’s left the price tag on and my voice chokes at the amount he would not only pay on this dress…but that he would waste on me. “Why do I need the dress?” I find my voice again as I close the bag and place it down in the footwell. “You’ll see…things work a little differently, are a little more traditional at the White Moon pack.”

“Pack your bag.” Tears almost dropped from his eyes. And if Damien Hale was scared, then it was worse than I had ever imagined. I dragged my feet to my room. My body felt heavy, like stone tied to me. I pulled out my small black backpack. My fingers trembled as I shoved in shirts, jeans, socks, whatever I could find. The zipper caught on the fabric, and my clumsy fingers fumbled. My breath came fast, broken, angry. What was the point? Where could we go? How long could we hide?

He’s standing under the tree, grinning like he just won the lottery, holding a bundle of small backpacks in his hands. “Well done. You’re halfway,” he announces, his voice annoyingly cheerful. “For the descent, you’re all going to need one of these.” He holds out a backpack, and my stomach drops. The pack looks small enough, but there’s no way this is just some casual accessory. There’s a catch. There’s always a catch. I step forward and grab one, and the second I lift it, my arm nearly gets yanked out of its socket. It’s weighted. Of course, it’s fucking weighted.

"The Whispering Woods. Northern territories. It’s no-man’s land. No Mafia, no Syndicates. Just the raw magic of the old world." I looked at the monitors. The perimeter cameras showed a black car idling at the edge of the district. We were being watched. "Dante," I said, pointing to the screen. He didn't panic. He moved with a cold, calculated efficiency. He grabbed a duffel bag and began tossing in supplies—ammunition, burner phones, and a heavy, leather-wrapped book I recognized as the Vance Ledger. She said the backpack I have is just fine.” I clench my fists, but don’t want to make a big deal in front of Hayden, so I say, “Do you want a new backpack?” He juts out his bottom lip. “Yeah. I really liked that one. It had dinosaurs on it, and the one Mom makes me wear is red and ugly. I hate red.” Duly noted. Don’t get the kid anything red. Stick to blues. “How about green?”

Daniels asked him, “Is there a reason you want to top up?” Zane thought for a moment and answered “Nah not really. Just in case you know?”
