Chapter 1 I woke slowly with my head pounding, feeling very disoriented. It was pitch black in my room as I opened my eyes. I reached over to turn my bedroom lamp on, but felt nothing. Where was my lamp? And then it all came back flooding to me. Liam kidnapped. Claire and the pack missing. The imprint.

In his time as a True Crime writer, Byron had interviewed many people, many of them disturbed or troubled in some way. In these interviews, he would often run up against what he called The Breakdown, to the point where, due to the pressures of telling him their story a person would hit an unknown well of feelings and just… shut down, usually in a maelstrom of tears. They always recovered but it was at a point that Byron always hated, even dreaded.

Fabian sat alone in the dark living room long after midnight, loosened tie hanging around his neck, untouched whiskey resting beside him. His phone buzzed continuously on the table. Maxine. Again. Again. Again. Fabian finally silenced the phone completely. For years, he had convinced himself Maxine was the woman he could never forget. But now? It might have hunted for food last night. The golden beam of light was starting to appear on the horizon. It was almost dawn and it made me enjoy my meal while watching the sunrise on the glass window. I was only able to finish half of the chicken, then I went to the window and opened the frames to let the sun rays come in. I shaded my eyes with my left hand as the sunbeam dazed in my direction. Only then I noticed that I was still wearing the rose pearl bracelet that the bookkeeper had given me. One of the beads disappeared gradually before my eyes. I took a closer look, and indeed there was already a space on the beads. The red thread was showing due to the disappearance of the one bead. “

I stared for a while at my reflection in the mirror and decided to sleep back. 'I don't care whatever happens I'm getting my beauty sleep'. Just as I laid back on my bed I heard a knock on my door. Who could it be? 'Who is it?'. 'It's zina'. 'What do you want?'. 'Madam asked me to call you down for breakfast'. 'Breakfast? At 6? What kind of breakfast is that?'. 'Well, I don't know but my guess will be it's because the Davies family are around'.
