Dean Koontz Quicksilver Series Novels & Stories

The dangerous golden threads of my royal veins were pulsing brightly, glowing right through my skin like liquid fire. "Hold on,” I thought desperately, gripping my shirt over my heart and grinding my teeth together until my jaw ached. “Do not break now. You have already changed the timeline. You cannot let your own body destroy you before the end.” I stayed on the freezing stone floor for several long minutes, forcing myself to take slow, shallow breaths. I focused entirely on the cool air entering my lungs, using my mental willpower to push the golden fire back down into the dark seals of my soul. Slowly, the blinding heat in my chest began to cool, leaving my skin damp with sweat and my mu

She took them to prove she could. Anger spikes in me. The silver leaps to answer. I don’t force it. I just answer back. Light floods the room—soft, but blinding. The healers cry out. Wards shiver and adjust on their own. Aron’s whole body arches, one sharp jolt— Then nothing. The silver pulls back. I fall, legs gone, straight into Caleb’s arms. Exhaustion slams into me, heavy and sudden. For a second, the world holds its breath.

This was my only chance to escape. “Stop this right away. Cerelia, come here child,” yelled my uncle Alarik as he stormed towards me. But my grandpa was faster. He lunged forward and grabbed my sword to slash at us, trying to ward off Uncle Alarik. The sharp blade ripped Uncle Alarik’s arm, and blood oozed from his wound. “Stay away, Alarik, or you’ll lose your life. No one can harm me. I’m the ultimate Alpha of the Silvermane Warriors, and I shall uphold the rules until my last breath.”

"You knew?" My voice shakes as I stare at my mother. "You knew what I was and didn't tell me?" The council chamber feels suffocating despite its size. Every important wolf in the Royal Pack is here, all staring at me like I'm a ticking bomb. "I suspected," Mom says quietly. "But I hoped I was wrong. The Silver Moon Wolf is just a legend-" "Apparently not," the eldest council member interrupts. He's pulled out an ancient book, its pages yellow with age. "It's all here. 'When the moon bleeds silver and the marked one bears lightning scars, the weapon of ending shall rise.'"

Opening my eyes, I saw the hues of the shield surrounding me and spread out my hands to spread out the shield to cover the entire room. I smile in excitement as I see how surprised my mate was looking at the shield. He moves forward to the edge and places his hands on it. I’m sure it did not surprise him because this was the first time he saw a shield that was summoned, as Princess Alexa would have summoned hers in his presence before now, but because my shield differed from his sister’s own. I’m also quite surprised but excited by the appearance of my shield. Instead of the bright rays of light, Princess Alexa’s shield appeared as mine gave out a golden ray of light that glows and dims ever

A single figure emerged from the tree line, shoulders hunched, steps limping. Droco. Ryker ran. The huntsman stumbled forward, shirt dark with blood at his side and across his thigh. A deep gash ran across his temple, crusted in dried dirt. He clutched a folded scrap of cloth stained, weather-beaten, and packed with charcoal sketches and quick scrawl. “Silas,” Droco rasped. “He’s moving faster than we thought. Ridge scouts -everywhere.” Ryker caught him just before he collapsed, slinging one of Droco’s arms around his shoulders and dragging him toward the med-house.

The man standing in front of me was frail. His height made him stoop. The moonlight captured his sunken eyes just right. He held a tome so thick I feared he would fall over. Despite its size it was a beautiful book. The outside was shiny black. Jewels dotted the front. The back was imbued with bright gold filigree. The man stood on an altar made of the same stuff. It was shiny black. It almost looked like water. I wanted so badly to reach out and touch it but I stopped myself. Something about this felt like a test. I don’t know why I got that impression but I dug my toes into the earth and clasped my hands behind my back.

Just as I started to think that I was safe, thundering footsteps tramped down the hall in my direction. Panic flooded my system, and I looked around desperately for something, anything that would keep my secret. I could not allow myself to be caught. My heart raced faster as the footsteps drew nearer. What could I do? With that thought, calm slid through me, and Silver took control of my body, letting me sink into the safe embrace of her pelt.

⛏️ Chapter Twelve: The Descent into the Silver Veins The air in the disused mine shaft hit us like a physical weight—damp, metallic, and cold. The familiar scent of earth and granite was overlaid with a strange, subtle hum that made the hairs on my arms rise. This was the source of the Silver Wolf Pack’s ancient magic—the ground itself was rich in trace lunar metal, a faint echo of the Shard's power. It was protection, but it was also a homing beacon.
