Before I could stop him, he reached into his boot, pulled out a hidden dagger, and drove it into his own chest with savage force.
“No!” I shouted, lunging forward,but too late.
His body jerked once, then slumped. Blood spilled from the wound in thick, dark streams, soaking into the frozen ground beneath him.
“I’d rather die,” he gasped, a cruel smile twisting his lips as his eyes lost focus, “than give you the honor…”
He died smiling, and I hated him for it.
I stood over him, my blade still raised, staring down at the lifeless body. There was no thrill in his death. No vindication. Only silence. A cold, widening emptiness that settled into my chest like a stone.
