Her name was Rosie, and the books, she explained, were not for sale. They were for anyone to read and people frequently took them home and brought them back and sometimes traded them for books that they had at home. The smell of the library is a blend of worn, old pages, vanilla-scented candles, and the unique fragrance of the sun-burning grass in the summer. I feel a sense of coziness as I pick up the books from the floor. Approaching the man gathering the last books from the floor, each book seeming to carry a piece of the library’s soul, I notice that he is elderly, his presence radiating impressive calmness as if he is in no hurry to pick up the books.
