Her presence, light and confident, was unremarkable to most but under Eddie’s gaze, and against me, it felt like a small storm.
He watched from behind the glass. Occasionally, his eyes flicked to us. Brief, calculated, deliberate. Never interfering. Never smiling. Just aware.
By the end of the day, my patience was stretched, but intact.
At six, I stood.
“You’re leaving?” Eddie asked.
“Yes,” I said, weary but composed.
He paused, studying me longer than necessary. “Good. Tomorrow will be heavier.”
