“It is I, Elder Selene. Beta Max sent me. May I enter?” My stomach twisted. This was it the interrogation. They would peel my mind open and see every shameful secret Dexter had buried there. I wanted to refuse, to hide under the blankets like a child, but I knew I couldn’t. Not if I wanted any chance of redemption. “Come in,” I whispered. The door unlocked with a soft click. Elder Selene stepped inside, her silver hair braided, eyes glowing faintly with power. Max followed close behind, his broad frame filling the doorway. His gray eyes found mine immediately, filled with a fierce protectiveness that made fresh tears sting.

“Not many get that close to me in that form. Something about you differs from the others. I have worked hard to fit into this pack with no trouble. I have seen you around, but never got close.
