Clara’s POV The Westfield mall security office smelled like burnt coffee and industrial carpet cleaner. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, too bright for midnight. A uniformed guard nodded us through the side door without asking questions. Emma was already there. She stood in the center of the room like she’d been holding herself together by sheer will for the last hour. Her hair was wild, mascara streaked down both cheeks, but when she saw us she didn’t cry harder. She just exhaled, a sound that was half sob, half relief, and opened her arms.

Emma watched in horror as Axel picked up a blade that had been heating in the fire and brought it towards her. “Please don’t do it,” she begged but Axel sunk the blade into the upper right side of her chest. Emma screamed out loud as the pain spread all over her body. “Ahhhh…” Michelle was laughing and recoding the incident on her phone. “Keep going Axel. She needs more.”

But I could feel my heart breaking piece by piece… and maybe it was even innumerable pieces. I felt myself go cold suddenly, with my chest feeling so tight like someone held it so, to torture me like this. I could feel the corners of my eyes go hot. I just took a deep breath instead. I had to control this feeling. I must not break down in front of anyone. I am Xerra. I am an elite warrior!

Michael asks us and I shrug while Emma taps her finger on her chin. “Steam please,” she says and I nod. They open a door and we step inside and the heat hits me in the face and I start sweating almost immediately. “Oh my God, this is insane. I can almost feel all the toxins leave my body,” Emma says a few minutes in. “Okay, aren’t we going to talk about that outside?” I let out and she shrugs her shoulder. I stare at my best friend that is completely naked now while I am wrapped in a towel. “Emma, he called me Mrs. Hayes, which means that Wyatt told them that.” I let out.

“I just didn’t want to make a big deal out of—whatever this is.” “That’s the thing, Emma. We don’t know what it is. So we are making a big deal out of it.” She didn’t argue again. Just nodded and let her head sink back into the pillow. --- Dr. Harris was efficient, warm, and always a little too observant. She swept into the room with her bag, her white coat fluttering behind her like a cape. “Emma,” she said with a smile. “Xander tells me you’re not feeling too great.”

Her body ached at the miss of his heat from around her. She was not feeling well. She felt feverish. Emma walked to the broken window right beside her and her heart froze at what she saw. Rain poured down at him washing away his blood which she could witness through the crackling thunder light but what stopped her heart was there were no wounds on his chest or his forehead. Xander was like him!

The gentle beeping of monitoring equipment provided a rhythmic counterpoint to the silence. Emma was propped up in the bed nearest the window, her white-blonde hair pulled back in a loose braid that highlighted the bruising along her jaw and cheekbone. Her normally vibrant green eyes were dulled by pain medication, but alert. Bandages wrapped her left arm and disappeared beneath her hospital gown. Despite her injuries, she attempted a smile when she saw us.

Her tongue clicked with a half-smile. “What?!?” His eyes widened and he was about to attack her again, but Casya pulled him away, but he was still struggling to try to be free from her. Yet Casya was giving all her strength not to let him go, knowing he might really lose his license as a detective for hurting his comrade. When they finally left, Ameira took a deep breath and grabbed her phone from her jacket pocket, and called E. [ What is it you called?] "Have you hacked this hospital's system?"

"No, I'm not sick. I'm just here for a test too." "Oh. Okay." He smiled at me. That trusting, open smile that kids have before the world teaches them to be cautious. "That's cool." Emma hadn't looked at me once. She was staring at the floor, tears already streaming down her face. Silent tears that she kept wiping away, trying to hide from Alex. "Ms. Reed? Mr. Sullivan?" The technician appeared. A young woman with a kind smile. "We're ready for you." We followed her into a small examination room. Emma, Alex, me, and both our lawyers crowding into a space meant for three people.

ALEXANDER’S POV I sniff in the smell of the waiting room, the smell of burnt coffee and disinfectant. It’s a smell I have learned to associate with things going wrong slowly, then all at once. Emma sits rigid on one of the plastic chairs, her arms folded tightly across her chest and her eyes fixed on the floor as though she’s afraid of looking up. Hilda is beside her, with her fingers wrapped around her phone, opening and closing it without purpose.
