The men exchanged suspicious glances with us before heading toward the counter.
“Quick,” Vera leaned toward me. “Egor doesn’t like sweets. He hates chocolate and fruit.”
After hearing that, I realized it would be easier to gift Egor a drawing of a cake than to actually bake one he’d enjoy. After a moment’s thought, I said,
“The only thing I can imagine is a sponge cake soaked in rum syrup, with salted caramel, whipped cream, maybe a layer of cream cheese filling. You could add some nuts.”
“That’s perfect,” Vera declared. Maura nodded approvingly.
