"What is Cara doing he-" She never got to finish her statement as all of a sudden, a shorter ebony skinned lady walked towards my sister, pulled her cheeks closer and gave her a befitting kiss on the lips, sucking every breath from my sister.

“If you think I’m doing what your idiot of-a-mum asked me to do, you’re more stupid than I thought.” Mia narrowed her eyes at her supposed new sister. “Trust me, I don’t expect anything from you.” Savannah flicked her golden hair off her shoulder in a well-practiced motion. “Good. Because I wouldn’t be seen dead with someone like you.” She went to leave but turned back again. “Oh, and just to let you know, your outfit is beyond tragic.”

I narrowed my eyes to view it clearly. I gasped shockingly, and the kind of pain that hit against me was an unfathomable one. My hands suddenly turned cold, and it shook like a scared baby mouse. What did I just see? Jamilah's death? I dropped the book first, and checked the other one. It wasn't Jamilah's book. It was from Ace. It had the words, "My Sister," written on it. What was going on?

Mom said quietly as they got into the ambulance. "Your sister killed your other fine sister?" I heard someone ask. "She's not my sister, not anymore!" That was the beginning of my nightmare. I descended the ladder slowly, still holding the book like it might vanish if I blinked. “I’ve only ever seen one copy,” I whispered. “It was left with me when I was a baby.” She nodded once. “And now you’ve seen the second.” I looked down at the book again. “Do you know where it came from?” I stared at her, the book pressed to my chest like it might anchor me in this moment. “You’re my sister.” Solene’s nod was small, but it shattered the ground beneath my feet. We moved without thinking, both of us drifting to the long table. The fire crackled softly behind us, casting warm light over old pages and newly opened truths.

I glanced at the cover. “Where did you even get this?” I asked. She shrugged. “Found it in the closet.” Right. I’d forgotten I’d left some of my sister’s old books here. The last time I’d sat here, my sister had been with me. We’d hidden from the storm, from Father’s guards, from everything that hunted us. Now I was hiding again — only this time, it was with another person I cared about. I looked down at the page Evelyn had been on. Some romance scene — overly sweet, too easy. And yet, a single line caught my eye, something about the way a man touched a woman like she was the only real thing left in the world.

"You can't just steal from your sister! I proposed to Poppy with that ring. I don't care if you're family. Give it back!" James snatched the ring from my hand and slipped it onto Poppy's finger. "Poppy, keep this ring safe from now on. Don't let anyone take it." Poppy looked shyly at the ring on her hand before burying her face in James's chest.

"They are both good girls, both of them... But you? As parents, don't you owe Sienna? Doesn't she deserve a little love?" Mamma collapsed into a chair, covering her face. Her shoulders shook violently. "And now, you won't even let them see each other one last time?" Grandma's voice was hoarse. "Vivian is going to be... gone tomorrow. Sienna is her only sister. The sister she protected since they were little! How can you let Vivian go like this? You want her to go with regrets?" "I... I didn't..." Mamma's voice came through her fingers, broken. "I just wanted Vivian to be happy on her last day. I didn't want Sienna to upset her..."

I turned to her, meeting her innocent gaze. "Soon, baby, soon," I reassured her, my hand gently patting her head. "And what about Mom? You said you would bring her back to me." A pang of sadness echoed in my voice as I replied, "I will bring her to you, baby, just like I have always promised." I murmured sadly, feeling her small hand reaching for mine, seeking reassurance. This was the reason I needed that powerful book. My sister had mentioned it held the solution I sought. I was willing to move heaven and earth just to obtain it, and indeed, I did.

That doesn’t mean it pisses me off any less, though. “What are you doing with it?” I asked, turning the book upright to see if I could make out the name on the cover. It is so worn that the front could as well be blank. I looked up at my sister expectantly. She better have a good ass explanation for ruining the work I barely managed to finish. “I noticed something weird about it,” she rounded the desk and came to stand behind my chair. “Usually, all the books about old kings and all that are saved in a locked closet, right?” I nodded.
