My eyes scan the room; ornate ceiling, familiar patterns. I’m back in Fijidale. My territory. My empire. Safe. For now. “Water,” I croak. Yosef moves before I finish the word and returns with a bottle pressed to my lips. It’s not water. Whiskey burns down my throat. I cough but don’t pull away. He knows I need this. Knows it keeps me sane. But not now. Not when I can barely think. “Thank you.” I rasp as he pulls the bottle away. The alcohol roils through my empty stomach. “But I need water.”

I'm not really happy, but I let my body sway with music as if I am. Asher Adams the happiest guy in the world, talented omega that is born into a family of billionaires…if only they knew. Laughter bubbles at the back of my throat and I swallow down my tears as I throw my hands up, swaying to the rhythm of the music. “Asher, buddy, I think you should slow down” my female best friend, Aurora, yells in my ear and I shake my head, letting the few strands of thick black curls that aren’t held back in my low ponytail fly all over the place.

It suddenly felt much drier than it had when I woke up. I swallowed, but it did nothing. “The fourth day,” the wraiths whispered. “The day of thirst.” We made our way down to the ground floor and into the yard. The air outside was thicker, the smell not as concentrated as inside, but still there. Students moved around more slowly than usual, eyes shadowed, skin sallow from lack of sleep and pain.

I didn’t waste another ounce of energy. The Purified Water had shattered the Instance’s illusion. That ravenous, mind-bending hunger was gone. But the real, gnawing emptiness in my gut remained. The game hadn’t created the hunger; it had just taken a biological fact and cranked the volume to eleven. If I didn’t eat, the sensation would return. It would build, just like the compulsion, until I was ready to chew on driftwood. The NPCs were desperate to get that monster-fish into me. That alone was proof it was poison.

Eden's POV I stand by the sink as the pipes reluctantly splutter to life. A small burst of water explodes from the faucet, followed by a steady trickle. I desperately cup my hands underneath, waiting for them to collect just enough liquid to bring it to my lips. I drink it down without a thought, the overwhelming thirst taking over any worries I might have had about its cleanliness. Thankfully, it tastes fresh enough, and my shoulders drop in relief as I press my wet hands against my face.

“Eat, or you'll die. It's that simple. Open your mouth, Monroe.” My lips remain sealed, defying him. The ominous tone sends a jolt through my chest, making my heart stutter before racing ahead. I crave a breath of fresh air, a glimpse of sunlight, anything to remind me I'm still alive. “I…I need to quench my thirst,” I whisper, my voice cracking on the words. “And a bath…please.” The words are a desperate plea, torn from my parched throat. “One step at a time, then.” His deep, velvety voice wraps around me, comforting and unsettling at the same time. “You must be dying of thirst. This morning, I'm still so worried. I didn't get much sleep! I kept having horrible nightmares. In some, I was being chased by a family of zombies through the manor house, in others, I was the Bathory's meal. This food thing is really getting to me. All the little details I've put together is making me reflect on the nature of my hosts. And on the darkness surrounding them. I see Sarah coming to meet me. She looks more rested than I am. It's not very surprising considering...

“You ran up ahead.” “I thought I saw a ferret.” “They’re mongooses. Mongeese? They were brought here to help control the rat population but took over.” “Well, they’re cute. I want one.” “I think they’re mean.” “They just want love.” Quinn puts her phone back in her bag and holds out her hand. I take it, lacing our fingers and pulling her in for a kiss. We’re hiking today, on our way to see a waterfall. It’s hotter today, and the comfortable breeze is gone now that we’re in the thick of the woods. Still, being here with the love of my life is good for my soul. I didn’t know how much I needed this until we got here.

My throat was parched from all the exhaustion, and no one had come after I waited for goddess knows how long. I never knew something as basic as water was a luxury in this pack. Hmmmm! I may have been denied food and a lot of other basic necessities in the Moon Howler Pack, but water was never my problem. I could have as much as I wanted… This place… “Goddess, please watch over me.
