EVA'S POV The liquid tasted so heavenly. I found myself sucking greedily to get more and more. I felt as if my centuries-old thirst was being satisfied. Someone tried to pull my head away. No! I wouldn’t let them take away my treasure from me this time. I held on tightly with determination. I felt a voice in my mind. Awww...It was Alex. I will come back to you, baby but first let me satisfy my thirst. I am so thirsty that it is painful. You too wouldn’t want me to be in pain, would you?

I didn’t waste another ounce of energy. The Purified Water had shattered the Instance’s illusion. That ravenous, mind-bending hunger was gone. But the real, gnawing emptiness in my gut remained. The game hadn’t created the hunger; it had just taken a biological fact and cranked the volume to eleven. If I didn’t eat, the sensation would return. It would build, just like the compulsion, until I was ready to chew on driftwood. The NPCs were desperate to get that monster-fish into me. That alone was proof it was poison.

Eden's POV I stand by the sink as the pipes reluctantly splutter to life. A small burst of water explodes from the faucet, followed by a steady trickle. I desperately cup my hands underneath, waiting for them to collect just enough liquid to bring it to my lips. I drink it down without a thought, the overwhelming thirst taking over any worries I might have had about its cleanliness. Thankfully, it tastes fresh enough, and my shoulders drop in relief as I press my wet hands against my face.

The inferno of unity had set the multiverse alight. The Song now pulsed with a feverish rhythm that no realm could ignore. Forty thousand years after the first terrified steps into Thornwood, the flames of remembrance had become an unstoppable force of creation and desire. World Trees across existence bloomed with luminous sap that tasted of sex and starlight. In the Grand Nexus, the Flame Root had grown into a colossal living temple of pleasure, its chambers constantly filled with the sounds of joining.

“Eat, or you'll die. It's that simple. Open your mouth, Monroe.” My lips remain sealed, defying him. The ominous tone sends a jolt through my chest, making my heart stutter before racing ahead. I crave a breath of fresh air, a glimpse of sunlight, anything to remind me I'm still alive. “I…I need to quench my thirst,” I whisper, my voice cracking on the words. “And a bath…please.” The words are a desperate plea, torn from my parched throat. “One step at a time, then.” His deep, velvety voice wraps around me, comforting and unsettling at the same time. “You must be dying of thirst. This morning, I'm still so worried. I didn't get much sleep! I kept having horrible nightmares. In some, I was being chased by a family of zombies through the manor house, in others, I was the Bathory's meal. This food thing is really getting to me. All the little details I've put together is making me reflect on the nature of my hosts. And on the darkness surrounding them. I see Sarah coming to meet me. She looks more rested than I am. It's not very surprising considering...

I want one.” “I think they’re mean.” “They just want love.” Quinn puts her phone back in her bag and holds out her hand. I take it, lacing our fingers and pulling her in for a kiss. We’re hiking today, on our way to see a waterfall. It’s hotter today, and the comfortable breeze is gone now that we’re in the thick of the woods. Still, being here with the love of my life is good for my soul. I didn’t know how much I needed this until we got here.

My throat was parched from all the exhaustion, and no one had come after I waited for goddess knows how long. I never knew something as basic as water was a luxury in this pack. Hmmmm! I may have been denied food and a lot of other basic necessities in the Moon Howler Pack, but water was never my problem. I could have as much as I wanted… This place… “Goddess, please watch over me. He nodded eagerly. “If you like your work now, you can stay abroad. But if you want to come back, I can help you start a company and do whatever you want. This time, everything is up to you.” He sounded sincere and desperate, but to me, it was absurd. I didn’t even want to listen anymore, so I turned to leave.
